Swiss voters have overwhelmingly rejected a referendum proposal to strengthen the country's neutrality, with 70 per cent voting against the measure and majorities in all 26 regions opposing it. The proposal, championed by the right-wing populist Swiss People's Party, sought to prevent Switzerland from joining international sanctions unless authorised by the United Nations—a move that would have effectively granted Russia veto power given its position on the UN Security Council. The rejection demonstrates Swiss voters' preference to maintain their current level of international engagement, despite arguments from pro-Russia factions that Switzerland's alignment with the EU and NATO had compromised its historical neutrality.

The measure would have barred cooperation with NATO, despite Switzerland having maintained such collaboration for three decades without formally joining the alliance. The debate was sparked by Switzerland's recent decision to join EU sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, which supporters of the initiative argued had dangerously compromised Switzerland's traditional non-aligned stance. Under Switzerland's system of direct democracy, where citizens typically ballot four times annually on policy matters, voters were divided on security concerns—some emphasising that neutrality was essential for protection, whilst others questioned whether true security required closer ties with neighbouring democracies.
