Variety · 1 month ago

A Chinese filmmaker's debut documentary, exploring a family's crisis following a patriarch's stroke in a remote town, has secured international representation. The hybrid nonfiction work examines themes of aging, domestic violence, and family responsibility in contemporary China, drawing on the director's personal history. The film earned recognition at major festivals, winning the Documentary Australia award at Sydney Film Festival after its premiere at Visions du Réel.

Paris-based distribution company Inwave Films has agreed to represent the title for international sales. The sales agent emphasised the film's blend of intimate storytelling with formal cinematic innovation, positioning it as a significant Asian documentary from the year. The director selected Inwave for their understanding of both the film's intended audience and the global market landscape.
