During a System of a Down concert at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on 15 July, frontman Daron Malakian repeatedly jabbed at Oasis while giving the crowd live updates on England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina. When Argentina equalised, Malakian told fans he would "blame Oasis" if England lost, and later urged them to "boo Oasis" instead of him. The comments extended a running feud rooted in decades-old remarks by Noel Gallagher, and drew attention partly because Oasis had become closely associated with England's World Cup run.

England ultimately lost the semi-final 2-1 after a late Argentina goal, ending a tournament in which the team had celebrated wins by singing Oasis's "Wonderwall" with supporters. Malakian's dig was not an isolated incident: two nights earlier, at the same venue, he had led the crowd in a modified chant of System of a Down's "Needles" mocking Oasis. His animosity stems from a radio interview roughly 25 years ago in which Noel Gallagher called System of a Down "the shittiest band of all time." System of a Down are next scheduled to headline the Sick New World festival in Fort Worth, Texas, on 24 October.
