Tarja Turunen, the former Nightwish vocalist, has spoken candidly about her acrimonious 2005 departure from the band, telling Metal Hammer magazine she regrets not pursuing legal action against her former bandmates. She said contracts and her contractual rights would have put the group "in deep shit for a long time" had she chosen to enforce them, but she opted instead to walk away without a fight, a decision she now views with some regret.

Turunen was dismissed from Nightwish at the end of the band's 2005 tour via an open letter, also published on the band's website, in which her bandmates accused her of prioritising business and money over the group's emotional bonds. She described the aftermath as devastating, saying she was hounded by Finnish tabloids for weeks and ultimately left the country for Buenos Aires, with the fallout affecting her family and friends as well as her ability to trust others. She has previously ruled out a full reunion with the band, though she remains in occasional contact with founder Tuomas Holopainen, and her husband Marcelo Cabuli separately pursued and lost a defamation lawsuit in 2011 over Nightwish's official biography.
