The rumours grew after her chart-topping duet with country singer Morgan Wallen, "What I Want," and after her reported boyfriend, ice hockey player Jack Hughes, was seen laughing at a sexist joke Trump made during a call with his Olympic-winning team. McRae, speaking to Variety, said she prefers to express her political stance through the organisations she supports rather than public statements.

She pointed to a tour merchandise item, a "Little Miss Possessive" hoodie, whose proceeds went to the Global Fund for Women and The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention charity, as evidence of where she stands. The 23-year-old also declined to discuss her romantic relationship with Hughes in detail, citing a desire for privacy, and avoided confirming whether songs from her 2025 album So Close to What and later single "Tit For Tat" reference her ex, singer Kid Laroi. The wide-ranging interview also touched on her growing friendship with Taylor Swift, who sent her homemade sourdough bread and invited her to her recent wedding, and revealed McRae has begun early work on her fourth studio album with songwriters Amy Allen and Emile Haynie.
