Tatiana Maslany, Tony Shalhoub and John Turturro will star in Roundabout Theatre Company’s Broadway revival of Eugène Ionesco’s absurdist play *Rhinoceros* this spring. Directed by Diane Paulus, it will be the company’s first staging of an Ionesco play and follows a critically acclaimed premiere at Harvard’s American Repertory Theater.
Previews begin at the Todd Haimes Theatre on 7 April 2027, with opening night on 25 April and the limited run ending 13 June. Maslany will play Daisy, Shalhoub will play Jean and Turturro will play Bérenger, roles performed by Anne Jackson, Zero Mostel and Eli Wallach in the 1961 Broadway production. Eugène Ionesco was a Romanian-French playwright associated with the Theatre of the Absurd, which uses strange or illogical events to explore human behaviour and society. In Rhinoceros, people in a town begin turning into rhinoceroses, while one man struggles to understand what is happening and how to respond.
The play was first staged in 1959 and reached Broadway in 1961, with Anne Jackson, Zero Mostel and Eli Wallach among its cast. Its central characters include Bérenger, an ordinary man, and Jean, his friend; Daisy is another person close to Bérenger.
Roundabout Theatre Company is a New York non-profit theatre organisation that stages plays and musicals on Broadway and elsewhere. Diane Paulus, who directs this production, is an American theatre director and has led productions at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard.
