Fox News ·

Jack Alexy set a world record in the men’s 100-metre freestyle at the USA Swimming Short Course World Championship Trials in Illinois. The 2024 Olympic team member clocked 44.64 seconds, beating the previous mark of 44.84.

Swimming for the California Golden Bears, Alexy finished ahead of fellow Olympians Chris Guiliano, who recorded 45.22 seconds, and Caeleb Dressel, on 45.65. The record came four weeks after Russia’s Egor Kornev had equalled the previous short-course mark. Alexy said he hopes to swim even faster at the world championships in Beijing from 1 to 6 December.

In short

  • Jack Alexy set a 100m freestyle world record in 44.64 seconds.
  • He beat the previous mark by 0.20 seconds.
  • He plans to target faster times in Beijing.

Explained simply

The 100-metre freestyle is a sprint in which swimmers race to cover the distance as quickly as possible. Short-course events are held in 25-metre pools, so swimmers turn more often than they do in the 50-metre pools used for long-course races.

Jack Alexy is an American swimmer who competed at the 2024 Olympics and swims for the University of California, Berkeley’s Golden Bears. Chris Guiliano and Caeleb Dressel, who also finished behind him at the trials, are fellow American Olympians.

The trials select swimmers for the world championships, where competitors from different countries race for international titles. Short-course records provide a way to compare performances in 25-metre pools, a format with different turning demands from long-course swimming.
