Tesla spending skyrockets as Cybercab, Semi, Megapack production timeline slips
Tesla has pushed back its timeline for reaching "volume production" of the Cybercab, Tesla Semi and Megapack 3 energy storage system, dropping earlier pledges that these would hit scale this year, according to its second-quarter shareholder letter. The company also quietly removed language about its Optimus robot reaching volume production, without explaining why. The delays underline the strain Tesla faces as it pours money into new products while trying to reposition itself from an electric-car maker into an AI and robotics company.
Tesla said it needs to boost production of its 4680 battery cell before the Cybercab and Semi can be built at scale, though it gave no reason for the Megapack or Optimus setbacks. Financially, revenue rose 26% year-on-year to $28.2 billion, driven by stronger vehicle deliveries (over 480,000, up more than 120,000 on the prior quarter) and a 13% rise in energy storage and solar sales to $3.1 billion. However, net income fell 5% to $1.1 billion, operating expenses jumped 47% to $4.3 billion, and the company swung to negative free cash flow of $1 billion, as capital expenditure more than doubled amid the costly product push.
