Tesla faces manufacturing hurdles as Optimus robot output remains limited
Tesla is reportedly struggling to scale production of its Optimus humanoid robot to its target of 20,000 units a week. Repurposing Model S and Model X production lines has created manufacturing problems, highlighting the difficulty of assembling robots whose smaller components require greater precision than car parts.
The Information says Tesla produced several hundred robots a week last month. The latest V3 version has more than 100 screws and small components in each hand and forearm, many still fitted manually; although lighter and equipped with more cameras, it lacks a sensing glove intended to improve durability. Optimus remains limited to specific internal tasks, despite Elon Musk’s ambitious claims, while Tesla reportedly plans to lease the robots initially and use data from them to improve the technology.
