Tesla’s robotaxis are moving in reverse
Tesla’s paid Robotaxi service covered fewer miles in the second quarter than in the first, despite expanding to six cities in Texas and Florida. The decline challenges Tesla’s ambitious claims that autonomous ride-hailing will become a major source of future revenue, particularly as its core businesses reported weaker-than-expected profits and its shares fell sharply.
Tesla’s cumulative figures imply that Robotaxi vehicles drove about 1.1 million paid miles in the first quarter, falling to roughly 700,000 in the second — a 36% decline. Elon Musk said Tesla must collect data specific to its planned Cybercab before deploying it widely, which contrasts with earlier suggestions that data from nearly 10 million customer vehicles would support robotaxi development; he also cited safety and regulatory concerns.
- Tesla’s paid Robotaxi mileage fell 36% quarter-on-quarter.
- The service expanded, but usage still declined.
- Tesla says Cybercab-specific data is needed before wider deployment.
