The 10 Best Survival Movies of All Time, Ranked
The article ranks ten films it considers among the best survival movies, focusing on stories where people are isolated and struggle against the elements. It excludes most horror and action films, arguing that including every story with life-or-death stakes would make the category too broad.
The examples in the supplied text include *Rescue Dawn*, based on pilot Dieter Dengler’s capture and efforts to survive in Laos; *Cast Away*, about a man stranded on an island; *The Martian*, about an astronaut trying to stay alive and return home; and *All Is Lost*, centred on Robert Redford alone at sea. The article presents these as varied takes on survival, from war and jungle captivity to isolation on land, in space and at sea.
In short
- The ranking focuses on isolation and battling the elements.
- It spans stories set in a jungle, on an island, on Mars and at sea.
- *Rescue Dawn* is based on pilot Dieter Dengler’s real experiences.
Explained simply
Survival films focus on people cut off from help who must find ways to stay alive in difficult surroundings. The danger may come from the weather, lack of food or water, injury, or the challenge of finding a route home.
The films in this category can tell very different stories: Rescue Dawn draws on pilot Dieter Dengler’s captivity in Laos, while Cast Away, The Martian and All Is Lost place their main characters alone on an island, in space and at sea. Deciding which films count as survival stories depends on how narrowly the category is defined, since many horror and action films also involve life-or-death danger.
