Donna Summer's 1975 disco hit "Love to Love You Baby" became a global sensation but also turned her into an unwilling sex symbol, culminating in a frightening moment when a concert in Italy descended into a near-riot. The 16-minute track, known for its breathy, sexually suggestive vocals, was a nightclub staple but left Summer uncomfortable with the image it created, one she felt boxed her in artistically and personally.

Summer recalled to The Telegraph in 2008 that while performing the song to a crowd of around 5,000 men in a tent in Italy, the audience became so agitated they pushed against the stage, forcing her to flee to her trailer, which the crowd then began rocking. She said she genuinely feared for her life in that moment. The song was later banned by numerous US and UK radio stations over its suggestive content, a decision Summer, as a mother, came to agree with in hindsight, saying she would not have chosen it to launch her career and spent years trying to move away from that image.
