Fleetwood Mac's 1977 track 'Second Hand News', the opening song on the band's landmark album Rumours, was directly inspired by the Bee Gees' 1975 disco hit 'Jive Talkin''. Guitarist and songwriter Lindsey Buckingham originally wrote the track, then titled 'Strummer', as a slower acoustic number, but after hearing the Bee Gees' song he sped up the rhythm and added heavier Celtic textures, turning it into the jaunty rocker that opens the album. The song exemplifies Rumours' recurring trick of masking personal heartbreak with upbeat instrumentation, since it was written as Buckingham's response to his real-life breakup with bandmate Stevie Nicks.

The wider context matters too: Rumours was recorded in 1976-77 while nearly every member of Fleetwood Mac was going through a painful split, with Mick Fleetwood divorcing his wife and John and Christine McVie also separating, feeding the raw emotion across the record. Producer Ken Caillat later recalled a chaotic, high-energy studio session in which Buckingham demonstrated the drum part to Mick Fleetwood with wild, aggressive physicality, shaping the song's driving rhythm. Nicks herself discussed the fraught atmosphere in a 1977 Creem interview, describing the discomfort of a band full of exes forced to work and socialise together constantly.
