Damon Albarn has once again suggested that some of Blur's biggest hits could just as easily have been Gorillaz songs, blurring the lines he's often expected to draw between his various musical projects. Speaking in a recent interview and echoing comments made six years earlier to Vulture, the Blur and Gorillaz frontman said he doesn't consciously distinguish between writing for either band, as all his songs "come from the same place" regardless of which project they end up in.

Albarn specifically named Blur's 1994 single "Girls and Boys", along with "Song 2", as tracks that could have worked as great Gorillaz songs, noting that the main practical difference is that Gorillaz relies on a drum machine and collaborator Remi Kabaka for rhythm, whereas he played all the instruments himself in Blur. He described Gorillaz as essentially what he would have become musically had he never been in Blur. The article notes that the opening 30 seconds of "Girls and Boys" — with its programmed drums from Dave Rowntree, Alex James's funk bassline and Albarn's synth lines — does carry a distinctly Gorillaz-like groove before the guitars and vocals bring it back into Britpop territory.
