Josh Hartnett has reflected on his early Hollywood career, saying he sensed that starring in the 2001 war film *Pearl Harbor* was a mistake before it was released. He said his fears proved justified, as the film’s huge scale and mixed critical reception made it an uncomfortable experience despite its commercial success.

Directed by Michael Bay and co-starring Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale, *Pearl Harbor* dramatised the 1941 attack and its aftermath. It cost about $140 million and earned nearly $450 million worldwide, but was widely criticised for its melodramatic romance and historical treatment; Hartnett later sought more independent, character-driven roles.
