Diane Keaton said filming the romantic comedy *Something’s Gotta Give* left her and co-star Jack Nicholson feeling “humiliated” because of its intimate scenes. Their discomfort mattered because the film placed a later-life romance at the centre of a mainstream Hollywood comedy, challenging the usual focus on younger couples.

Released in 2003 and written and directed by Nancy Meyers, the film stars Keaton as playwright Erica Barry and Nicholson as Harry Sanborn, a bachelor who normally dates much younger women. Keaton, then 57, described the kissing and bed scenes as frighteningly exposing, but said the shared vulnerability brought the pair closer; Keanu Reeves also plays a younger doctor interested in Erica.
