The 2006 role Christina Ricci was ready to quit acting if she didn’t get: “I even told my therapist”
Christina Ricci said she was so determined to play Rae Doole in 2006’s *Black Snake Moan* that she told her therapist she might quit acting if she did not get the part. She saw the character as a chance to portray the effects of abuse with care, and later described the role as her favourite and the one that made her feel like an artist.
In a 2007 interview, Ricci said her work with RAINN had informed her understanding of how abuse can affect survivors. Producers initially doubted she had the right physical image for the role, so her agent sent them more sexualised magazine shoots she had done. The film, also starring Samuel L Jackson and Justin Timberlake, drew controversy for its subject matter and promotional focus on sex.
In short
- Ricci feared losing the role would end her acting career.
- She wanted to portray Rae’s experience of abuse thoughtfully.
- The part became her favourite and affirmed her artistic identity.
