The 2011 role James Marsden hated playing: “I can’t stand these kind of movies”

Far Out ·

James Marsden, who is returning as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday, has spoken about a role he found particularly uncomfortable: Fred O'Hare in the 2011 family comedy Hop. This matters as a rare candid admission from an actor whose career has otherwise ranged from the X-Men franchise to Sonic the Hedgehog and an Emmy-nominated turn in Paradise, showing that even successful performers look back on certain projects with discomfort rather than pride.

In Hop, Marsden played opposite a CGI-animated rabbit voiced by Russell Brand, and he admitted to Digital Spy that he struggles with films where human actors visibly fail to interact convincingly with animated characters, saying "I can't stand these kind of movies… when it doesn't work." He described pushing animators to let him physically engage with the character, such as carrying him, to reduce the sense of disconnect. Hop was poorly received by critics on release, though Marsden's performance was often singled out as one of its few strengths.

  • James Marsden criticised his own role in 2011's Hop.
  • He disliked acting opposite a CGI rabbit character.
  • Marsden now returns as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday.
