My Bloody Valentine, the 1981 Canadian slasher film directed by George Mihalka, is now streaming free on Pluto TV. Set in the fictional mining town of Valentine Bluffs, the film follows a masked killer who resurfaces to punish the community for holding a Valentine's Day dance, decades after a mining disaster claimed several lives and left one survivor bent on revenge. Though often dismissed on release as a derivative Halloween imitator, the film has since earned a strong cult following, notably counting Quentin Tarantino among its admirers, who has called it a personal favourite.

The film grossed $5.72 million against its budget, a modest return that paled next to Paramount's earlier horror hit Friday the 13th, which took $40 million a year prior; it was originally titled The Secret to conceal Paramount's intent to cash in on the emerging holiday-slasher trend. My Bloody Valentine helped cement Valentine's Day as fertile ground for horror, following the 1972 anthology film Tales from the Crypt and preceding 1982's Hospital Massacre. A 2009 3D remake directed by Patrick Lussier proved far more commercially successful, earning $101 million on a $15 million budget.
