‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ Unpacked by VFX Supervisor, Including Red’s Redesign and Character-Effects Automation: ’He’s Similar by Choice’

Variety ·

DNEG Animation rebuilt Red and the other characters for the third Angry Birds film after taking over animation from Sony Pictures Animation. VFX supervisor Patrick Harboun said the team aimed to preserve Red’s recognisable appearance while creating a new production workflow, with character effects automated on about 75% of shots by later stages.

Because the earlier films’ tools could not be transferred, DNEG reworked Red’s geometry, feathers, facial rig and expressions, using the previous films to create a style guide. The film introduces more than 20 characters, including Red and Silver’s children and their pet spider. Its effects system simulates selected fur, feather and deformation effects after animation approval, then flags shots for artists; the automated share rose from about 25% to 75%, while artists maintained the reusable templates.

  • DNEG rebuilt Red to keep him familiar.
