Atari revives the 800XL as a hybrid console and computer
Atari’s 800XL is returning as a modern hybrid gaming console and computer, bringing back a machine that had been largely out of sight since the line was discontinued in the early 1990s. The revival combines retro games and programming features with modern connections, giving fans a way to play and create on hardware inspired by the original.
The new model costs $220 and includes 25 games, among them Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede and Missile Command. It connects to a television via HDMI, has USB ports, a cartridge slot for original 800XL titles, and a full-sized mechanical keyboard with access to Atari Basic. Designed by Plaion Replai, it also supports homebrew content and is available to preorder, with shipments scheduled to begin on 23 April 2027.
