The Avalanches have released a new single, “Blue Shadows”, featuring Karen O. The track marks another step in the Australian trio’s return to regular releases after a six-year gap and continues their characteristic sample-led sound.
“Blue Shadows” asks whether a broken heart can be mended and prominently samples “Shadows From Nowhere”, a 1983 Italo single by Celso Valli’s Blue Gas project. It follows May’s “Together” and the Jamie xx collaboration “Every Single Weekend”; the group’s most recent album, 2020’s We Will Always Love You, also included a brief Karen O appearance.

The Avalanches are an Australian electronic music group known for building songs from many short pieces of older recordings, alongside new vocals and instruments. Their music often combines pop, dance, hip-hop and obscure records from different eras.
The group’s best-known early album, Since I Left You, was released in 2000 and gained attention for its densely layered use of samples. They then went many years between albums, releasing Wildflower in 2016 and We Will Always Love You in 2020.
Karen O is the lead singer of the American rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs and has also worked with other artists. Celso Valli is an Italian musician and producer; Blue Gas was one of his projects, and its 1983 track provides part of the musical source material for the new song.
