The Beatles Are Coming Home: Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr Back Massive New Liverpool Attraction

American Songwriter ·

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have endorsed a major expansion of The Beatles Story in Liverpool, which is due to move to a new site in 2028. The project matters because Apple Corps, the company overseeing the Beatles’ creative and business interests, is taking over the attraction, making it the first official Beatles fan experience operated in the city.

The new venue at St Johns Shopping Centre will cover 100,000 square feet, more than four times the attraction’s current size, and include immersive exhibits with original artefacts and reconstructed sets. St Johns Beacon will host a separate Yellow Submarine-themed viewing experience offering 360-degree views of Liverpool; ticket proceeds will also support emerging local artists and cultural projects.

In short

  • The Beatles Story is moving to a much larger Liverpool site in 2028.
  • St Johns Beacon will offer a Yellow Submarine-themed city view.
  • Ticket proceeds will support Liverpool artists and cultural projects.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Apple Corps’ involvement and the artists’ endorsement could give the attraction greater authenticity, while a larger venue with original artefacts and immersive exhibits may deepen visitors’ connection to the Beatles’ history. Supporters may also welcome the Yellow Submarine experience’s contribution to local artists and cultural projects, alongside the prospect of attracting visitors and investment to Liverpool.

The case against

A project of this scale may risk presenting the Beatles’ legacy as a commercial spectacle, with immersive sets and a themed viewing attraction potentially prioritising entertainment over historical depth. Critics may also question whether the expansion and its use of prominent city-centre space will deliver lasting benefits for Liverpool’s wider cultural life, despite the planned support for local artists.
