Mark Knopfler's musical awakening emerged from exposure to blues and rock artists of the 1950s and 1960s, with guitarist Hank Marvin of The Shadows becoming his primary obsession. As a teenager, Knopfler fixated on acquiring Marvin's distinctive red Fender Stratocaster, but his father's modest means resulted in the purchase of a Höfner Super Solid guitar for £50 when Knopfler turned fifteen.

Unable to afford a separate amplifier, Knopfler creatively connected his guitar to the family radio—an experiment that ended when he destroyed the device. Despite never obtaining his dream instrument, Knopfler developed enduring affection for his first guitar and the technical foundation it provided. A watershed moment occurred in 1985 when Knopfler invited Marvin to perform alongside him at Wembley Arena, publicly recognising his childhood idol as essential to his artistic development.
