‘The Birds’ Limited Series Starring Sarah Snook Lands At HBO For Development From Tom Spezialy, David Heyman & UGT
HBO has taken on the development of a limited series inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds and Daphne du Maurier’s novella, with Sarah Snook set to star. The project reimagines the story in the present day, placing a murder mystery alongside the unexplained bird attacks.
Snook will play Myra Massey, who returns home with her young daughter while escaping a custody battle and investigating a childhood friend’s disappearance. Tom Spezialy wrote the pilot and will executive produce with Snook, David Heyman and others; Universal Global Television and HBO will co-produce. Earlier attempts to revisit the story, including a planned film remake and BBC series, did not proceed.
In short
- Sarah Snook will lead a present-day reimagining of The Birds.
- The plot centres on a disappearance, murder mystery and bird attacks.
- HBO is developing the series with Universal Global Television.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A present-day limited series could introduce du Maurier’s story to new audiences while exploring its themes through a fresh murder mystery and a mother’s return home. With Sarah Snook attached and HBO developing the project, supporters may see room for a thoughtful reinterpretation rather than a straightforward remake.
The case against
The original story and Hitchcock film are well regarded, so revisiting them may risk diminishing what made their atmosphere and ambiguity distinctive. Some viewers may also question whether adding a contemporary custody dispute and murder investigation deepens the source material or turns it into a familiar thriller.
