The Blue Wave’s Wake Intensifies Days After Election Day
As votes from Tuesday’s elections continued to be counted, Democrats’ gains showed the scale of their success, with the party taking control of both chambers of Congress. Several close races remained undecided, but Democrats led in most outstanding contests, suggesting their House majority could grow further.
The Associated Press had called 247 House seats for Democrats and 153 for Republicans, and 54 Senate seats for Democrats and 44 for Republicans. Recent House pickups included three Republican-held North Carolina districts, a seat in Arizona won by Amish Shah, and Virginia’s seat won by Shannon Taylor; Sam Forstag also won a House seat in Montana. Democrats had flipped seven Senate seats, led in the remaining contests in Alaska and Mississippi, and were ahead in two uncalled governor races in Kansas and Alaska after five governorships had flipped.
In short
- Democrats had won control of both the House and Senate.
- They led in most outstanding House races.
- Two close Senate contests and two governor races remained.
