The Borderlands series has sold over 100 million copies, and Gearbox is “cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year”
Gearbox Software says the Borderlands series has sold more than 100 million copies across all its games, marking a major milestone for the looter-shooter franchise. The studio also says it is developing more Borderlands 4 content for next year, while inviting players to share what characters and stories they want to see.
The studio has completed Borderlands 4’s Year One roadmap, which included two new playable characters and two Story Packs, and says weekly activities and community challenges will continue. It has not detailed next year’s plans, which come after a launch described as softer than expected, partly because of PC performance problems; a planned Switch 2 version was also delayed indefinitely.
In short
- Borderlands has sold more than 100 million copies.
- Gearbox is working on more Borderlands 4 content for next year.
- The studio is asking players what they want from the franchise.
Explained simply
Borderlands is a series of action games made by Gearbox Software, set on rough frontier worlds where characters fight enemies and search for weapons and other equipment. Its mix of shooting, role-playing features and comic science-fiction storytelling is often described as a “looter-shooter”.
Borderlands 4 is the latest main game in the series. Gearbox supports it with updates and larger additions, including new characters and story missions; these can give players more to do after the main game.
The series’ sales show how many copies its games have sold over time, while the plans for Borderlands 4 concern future content for that one game. The background includes a launch that Gearbox described as softer than expected, with PC performance problems and an indefinitely delayed Switch 2 version.
