The brutal way The Clash captured the sound of 1980’s ‘Somebody Got Murdered’
Joe Strummer wrote the lyrics to The Clash’s “Somebody Got Murdered” after hearing that a London parking attendant had been stabbed over a small amount of money. The song turned an ordinary local killing into a sombre reflection on how quickly a death can be absorbed into everyday life.
Mick Jones wrote the music, sang lead and added synthesiser, steering the track away from the heavy rock originally requested for the film *Cruising*. Topper Headon’s dog Battersea provided the barking, prompted by Strummer thumping Headon; the song was not used in the film and instead appeared on *Sandinista!*. The Clash first played it live at Los Angeles’s Roxy in April 1980, and it remained in their set until Jones left in 1983.
- A London stabbing inspired Strummer’s lyrics.
- Jones shaped the song with synthesiser and lead vocals.
- The track appeared on *Sandinista!*, not *Cruising*.
