Rod Stewart initially rejected ‘Ooh La La’, the 1973 Faces song ultimately sung by Ronnie Wood, saying he did not like it and that it was in the wrong key for him. The decision helped give Wood a defining vocal performance and allowed the song’s reflective tone, inspired by a conversation with his grandfather, to take centre stage.

According to Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, Stewart remained unenthusiastic about the track for 25 years before recording his own version in the late 1990s as a tribute to the late Ronnie Lane. The episode came as Stewart’s increasingly successful solo career was creating tensions within the band; he was reportedly largely absent during the early writing and rehearsal sessions for the song.
