The Oxfordshire village of Piddington is set to hold a symbolic vote on independence from the United Kingdom, in protest at plans to house more than 1,250 asylum seekers at a former Ministry of Defence site on its outskirts. The proposal has sparked local anger, with a group calling itself the "Women of Piddington" writing to every female MP to warn that the arrivals would vastly outnumber the village's existing population.

All those due to be housed are described as young, single, undocumented men who would be free to come and go from the site, a detail the 133-strong campaign group highlighted in arguing the men would outnumber local women by ten to one.
