The Deals: SoundCloud Acquires Nina Protocol; SOCAN Pairs With Musical AI for Gen-AI Attribution Initiative

Billboard · 3 hours ago

Recent music-industry deals centre on independent artist support and the development of AI attribution systems. SoundCloud has acquired the assets of Nina Protocol, while SOCAN and Musical AI are exploring tools intended to ensure Canadian creators can control, receive credit for and be paid when their work informs generative-AI music.

– SoundCloud acquired Nina Protocol’s editorial archive and “genre map” after the direct-to-fan marketplace closed last year. Nina artists can opt into SoundCloud’s creator ecosystem, including distribution, monetisation and audience-growth tools, through a planned migration process.
– SOCAN partnered with Musical AI to explore Canadian AI-attribution standards and infrastructure for licensing and compensation. The partners say participation should be opt-in and creators should be credited and paid when their music influences AI-generated output.
– Reservoir Media formed a joint venture with UK A&R executive Ollie Hodge, bringing his 2024-founded Some Action label into the Reservoir group. The London-based label’s roster includes Good Neighbours, whose debut single “Home” was certified platinum by the RIAA.
