The director Humphrey Bogart called a “Nazi son of a bitch”

Far Out ·

During the filming of *Sabrina*, Humphrey Bogart repeatedly insulted director Billy Wilder, including with antisemitic and Nazi-related slurs. The account complicates Bogart’s screen-hero image, while also describing how the two men later reconciled.

Bogart was reportedly resentful that he had not been Wilder’s first choice and uneasy with the director’s rapport with co-stars Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. Wilder answered back, but after Bogart was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 1955, he visited him and Bogart apologised before his death in 1957, aged 57. Wilder later remembered him as “very good”.
