Director David Lynch recalled being persuaded by actor Dennis Hopper to take LSD during the making of the 1986 film Blue Velvet. Lynch said the experience was positive, but it did not lead him to use psychedelic drugs regularly or influence his creative process in the way some might expect.

Hopper, who played the volatile Frank Booth in Blue Velvet, had a long and well-documented history with drugs and alcohol before becoming sober in the 1980s. Lynch said Hopper encouraged him to try acid, describing it as a “wonderful trip”, although he later concluded that meditation was a more useful route to altered states and creativity.
