A new ABC News documentary, which premiered on HBO Max on 3 September, has revived questions over the official ruling that Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York in 2019. Reporter Grace Tobin interviewed several figures close to the case, including Epstein's former lawyer and the forensic pathologist who examined his body, both of whom point to details they say undermine the suicide finding, at a time when speculation about Epstein's death and his powerful associates continues to attract public attention.

Lawyer David Schoen, who spoke to Epstein nine days before his death, said Epstein had denied an earlier apparent suicide attempt and remained determined to fight his sex trafficking case, which Schoen argues makes suicide unlikely. Forensic pathologist Michael Baden noted the ligature mark on Epstein's neck was horizontal rather than the upward angle typical of hanging, and pointed to three fractures, including one to the hyoid bone, which he said are more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicide; he added that the medical examiner's initial finding was inconclusive before being changed to suicide by a superior days later. The guards assigned to monitor Epstein reportedly fell asleep for around three hours and nearby cameras malfunctioned, and while a 2023 Justice Department review cited "job performance failures", it upheld the suicide ruling. Epstein's brother Mark also told the documentary he believes Epstein was murdered.
