Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 keeps much the same hardware as its predecessor but substantially expands the role of its 4-inch cover display. The reviewer argues that easier access to full Android apps makes the closed phone more useful for quick tasks, while the small, awkward screen can also create helpful friction against more distracting uses.

The redesigned cover-screen interface adds separate notification and Quick Settings gestures, an app drawer, and clearer access to Samsung’s MultiStar module for running almost any app externally. Apps can be displayed full-screen, in a square above the cameras, or in a narrow portrait layout; however, results vary widely, with apps such as Withings and Google Maps difficult to use, while Todoist, WhatsApp and MyFitnessPal suit brief interactions better.
