Mike Campbell, guitarist for Tom Petty's backing band, became involved through his connection to Petty and earned Harrison's approval based on his playing ability, despite lacking the individual fame of other group participants.

Campbell felt overwhelmed performing alongside such towering figures, particularly during early recording sessions. He chose to support rather than lead, providing guitar work but stepping aside for Harrison's signature slide playing, and ultimately did not pursue permanent membership, though he remained connected to the group's members through ongoing musical collaborations.
