‘The Liberation’ Trailer: Carrie Coon Stars In Guy Nattiv’s Complex Cult Thriller
Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for *The Liberation*, a thriller written and directed by Guy Nattiv, with Carrie Coon as a New Jersey housewife who leaves her family to join an all-female spiritual commune. The story follows her daughters’ efforts to bring her home and explores the pull between family ties and the chance to confront past trauma.
Coon plays Rita, a Holocaust survivor, with Lily James as the group’s spiritual leader and Bella Ramsey and Odessa Young as her daughters; Tracy Letts plays her husband. Nattiv drew on his own childhood experience of visiting his grandmother after she joined a cult, and later said he saw the group as trying to help her face trauma. The film begins a short Oscar-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, before a wider release on 8 January.
