The Long Dark will get new DLC again as studio shifts devs away from the sequel to survive an ‘uncertain’ industry: ‘We have to adapt to this’
Hinterland will resume making paid DLC for The Long Dark and move some staff from its sequel, Blackfrost, to support the original game. The studio says the change is intended to sustain the business amid an uncertain games market, while continuing development of Blackfrost with a smaller dedicated team.
Over the next 24 months or more, The Long Dark is planned to receive free Survival Mode updates, bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements and two new DLC streams. Blackfrost’s Early Access launch has already been delayed to 2027; Hinterland is self-funding it and is considering higher DLC and Survival Mode prices, though no changes are final.
