macOS 27 drops support for all Intel MacBooks
macOS 27 Golden Gate is the first Apple operating system release to support only Apple silicon Macs, ending compatibility with every Intel-based MacBook. Most MacBooks released from 2021 onwards can upgrade, while the 2020 M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are also supported; affected Intel owners will remain on macOS 26 Tahoe.
Golden Gate adds an AI-focused Siri redesign, photo-editing tools, Safari tab organisation, Liquid Glass customisation and performance improvements, but requires more storage than Tahoe. Users can check their chip under “About This Mac”; Intel Macs are expected to receive security updates for roughly two more years, potentially until September 2028.
