The MCU’s Oldest Villain Just Made a Surprise Return in ‘VisionQuest’

Polygon ·

Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, the Ten Rings leader who captured Tony Stark in the first *Iron Man* film, has returned in episode 6 of *VisionQuest*. The appearance reveals that Raza survived the apparent attempt to kill him and is now pursuing Vision as a bounty hunter, giving a new twist to the MCU’s earliest events.

In *Iron Man*, Raza held Stark captive in Afghanistan, where Stark built his first armour, the Mark 1. Obadiah Stane later incapacitated Raza and ordered his men to recover the suit and “finish up”, leaving his fate unclear. In *VisionQuest*, Raza confronts Paladin and Vision in Madripoor, says he has adamantium bullets, and tells Paladin to hand Vision over; Paladin recognises him from his past with Stark and the Ten Rings.

In short

  • Raza, the first villain faced by Iron Man, returns in *VisionQuest*.
  • He survived Stane’s order to “finish up” and now works as a bounty hunter.
  • Raza is pursuing Vision with adamantium bullets.

Explained simply

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a series of connected superhero films and television shows. Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, is one of its central characters; in the first film, he is captured by the Ten Rings, a militant group, and builds an improvised suit of armour to escape.

Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar leads the group that holds Stark captive. Obadiah Stane, Stark’s business partner, later orders his men to retrieve the suit and deal with Raza, but the film does not show what happens to him. Vision is an artificial being with a connection to Stark, while Paladin is a hired fighter; Madripoor is a fictional city in the Marvel stories.
