The Metallica song James Hetfield admitted gave him “real trouble” to perform. So he hasn’t played it since 2010
Metallica vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield said the song ‘That Was Just Your Life’ gave him real trouble to perform because he had to sing while playing a counter-rhythm on guitar. The challenge mattered to him as a chance to test and improve his musicianship while the band sought to recapture their familiar sound on 2008’s *Death Magnetic*.
Hetfield told *MusicRadar* in 2009 that slowing the riff down and practising helped the difficult passage become second nature. Metallica played the song 170 times over two years, but have not performed it live since the World Magnetic tour ended in 2010, despite later tours featuring no-repeat set lists.
In short
- Hetfield found the song’s vocal and guitar parts difficult to combine.
- Practice helped him master its counter-rhythm.
- Metallica last played it live in 2010.
Explained simply
Metallica are an American heavy metal band formed in 1981. James Hetfield is their singer and rhythm guitarist, responsible for playing the guitar parts that drive many of the band’s songs while singing.
That Was Just Your Life opens Death Magnetic, Metallica’s 2008 album, which marked a return to the faster, heavier style associated with some of their earlier records. Playing a guitar rhythm that differs from the vocal phrasing can make a song especially demanding to perform live.
Hetfield has described practising the song slowly until its difficult passage became familiar. Metallica played it regularly on the tour for the album, then dropped it from their live shows after 2010; the band’s later use of set lists without repeated songs among dates has not brought it back.
