Norway's King Harald V, Europe's second-longest-reigning monarch after the late Queen Elizabeth II, was laid to rest at Oslo Cathedral in a state funeral that drew senior royals from 11 households, including Spain, Denmark, Japan and Jordan. Harald died on 28 August aged 89 after ruling Norway for more than 35 years, and the emotional service was notable for the unguarded grief shown by usually composed royal figures, alongside gestures of support for his successor, King Haakon VIII, and widow, Queen Sonja.

Among the most striking moments were Denmark's King Frederik X, visibly tearful as he mourned his "Uncle Harald" and reaching for Queen Mary's hand as the coffin entered the cathedral, and Princess Anne, who was seen tenderly holding both of Queen Sonja's hands in a consoling gesture. Norway's Queen Mette-Marit was pictured wiping away tears, while Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra shared a poignant moment with her brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, before thanking Prince William and Princess Anne as guests departed the Royal Palace. Queen Sonja, married to Harald for almost 58 years, placed a rose on his coffin after Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre praised the couple's shared "love" and her decades of service alongside him.
