The most unexpected everyday tool can be found on your phone

Engadget ·

Apple’s Measure app can turn an iPhone into a quick, camera-based measuring tool, though many users may not know it exists. It offers a handy check when a tape measure is unavailable, but Apple recommends relying on a real tape measure for costly or potentially dangerous projects.

The app is preinstalled on iPhone 6s and later, and can measure lengths and rectangles, save screenshots and act as a level. iPhone Pro models from the 12 Pro onwards use LiDAR for added features such as height readings and edge guides; Apple says the app works best on clearly edged objects 2 to 10 feet away. Android alternatives are dwindling: Google discontinued its app in 2021, while Samsung’s Quick Measure is due to shut down at the end of 2026.

In short

  • iPhones have a little-known built-in measuring app.
  • Pro models use LiDAR for extra measuring features.
  • Android’s first-party options are being phased out.

Explained simply

Smartphones can use their cameras and sensors to estimate the size or position of objects. Apple’s Measure app is built into many iPhones and can check lengths, rectangles and whether a surface is level.

Some newer iPhone Pro models include a LiDAR sensor, which helps the app offer extra measuring features. These readings are convenient for everyday checks, but camera-based estimates may be less reliable than a tape measure, especially where accuracy matters.
