The Mountain Goats – “Candlebox”
The indie-rock band the Mountain Goats have released a new single called "Candlebox", named after the 1990s Seattle rock band. The track is a taster from their forthcoming album Days, due out on 7 August 2026 via the band's own Cadmean Dawn label. It matters as the latest instalment in frontman John Darnielle's ongoing engagement with the legacy of the grunge era, following the band's 2017 record Goths.
Despite its title, the song is not directly about the band Candlebox. Instead, Darnielle writes from the perspective of a hopeful, unnamed 1990s band offered the life-changing chance to open for Candlebox on tour around 1993 or 1994, only to break up shortly afterwards. The track features harmonies from Matt Nathanson, was produced by John Congleton and recorded at Sear Sound in Manhattan. Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin, who heard the song before release, described the Mountain Goats as "amazing" and said he loves it.
