This underlines the strength of the Homer adaptation's early run and cements it as a major commercial success for Nolan and star Matt Damon, even as the film heads into a weekend facing strong new competition.

The Odyssey took $14.7M on its second Monday and is projected to hit roughly $16M for the day, pushing its running total to about $320.1M; it should pass $330M by Wednesday, making it Nolan's third-highest domestic grosser behind "The Dark Knight" ($534.9M) and "The Dark Knight Rises" ($448.1M), and Damon's biggest leading-role hit. Its third weekend is expected to dip by up to 50% (to around $45M) as "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" opens. Elsewhere, the Broadway concert film "Hadestown" took $2.2M on Monday, second only to "The Odyssey", with takings nearing $1.4M today and a running total just under $14M; its limited run has been extended into a second weekend across 1,560 locations.
