Lindsey Buckingham has identified Yusuf, formerly known as Cat Stevens, as a lasting inspiration and a major influence on his development as a songwriter. The Fleetwood Mac musician said Yusuf’s work helped him move beyond guitar playing and find his own artistic voice.

Buckingham said he had played guitar for about 15 years before hearing Yusuf’s music, which he described as a revelation. He was drawn to Yusuf’s blend of folk, rock and classical influences, as well as his vocals, melodies and rhythmic sense; Buckingham said the singer has remained one of his favourite artists.
