The Online Right’s Closing Campaign Argument: Fascist Anakin Skywalker Memes

Right-wing social media users and prominent figures have circulated memes portraying Anakin Skywalker’s turn to Darth Vader as a metaphor for political grievance and resistance to perceived corruption. The article argues that these posts promote authoritarian themes and show how some conservatives use familiar fantasy stories to frame their politics ahead of the 2026 US midterms.

Examples include memes linking Anakin to young men who feel politically disenfranchised, and an image shared by Elon Musk showing Anakin with Padmé and their children on an imperial throne, captioned “This is what they stole from us.” The article also mentions similar “Malfoid” content inspired by Harry Potter, and says claims that the memes have achieved a major cultural victory appear detached from how voters beyond niche online circles may see them.
