The mother of an 18-year-old who took his own life from The Star Casino's Sky Deck in Brisbane has come forward after a young chef died in an almost identical way at the same spot a year later, raising fresh questions about whether staff could have intervened. Natalie Heslop says her son, Amir David Almansouri, used the same gap beside a handrail in the glass safety barrier that a 24-year-old Filipino chef used to climb onto a ledge and jump in June, and she is baffled that two people, a year apart, were able to access and breach the barrier so easily.

A coroner's report, backed by security footage, found Mr Almansouri had been "loitering" at the casino for more than two hours before reaching the Sky Deck at 4.19pm on 4 July last year, then sat alone near a water feature for an hour as staff and tourists passed without anyone checking on him. Heslop, who says The Star never formally acknowledged her son's death to her and was told legal action was not viable, is left piecing together his final hours from texts and CCTV, with no clear explanation for why he took his own life shortly after moving to Brisbane to live with his father.
