Xbox controller choice balances dependable wired play with wireless freedom

Engadget · 15 hours ago

Wired Xbox controllers eliminate battery worries and syncing issues, making them reliable for uninterrupted gaming. However, wireless controllers remain more convenient, particularly for console gaming from a sofa, and their performance is generally comparable to wired connections.

Microsoft’s controllers have polling rates of about 125Hz over USB and the Xbox Wireless Adapter, equating to roughly eight milliseconds of input delay. Bluetooth can add around four to eight milliseconds, while battery life can reach up to 40 hours with AA batteries; rechargeable AAs or Microsoft’s rechargeable battery pack offer practical compromises. Wired controllers are best suited to desk-based setups, whereas wireless models provide greater freedom of movement.

  • Wired controllers avoid batteries and connection problems.
  • Wireless Xbox controllers offer greater convenience and freedom.
