In February 1987, John Fogerty joined Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Taj Mahal for an impromptu jam at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. Dylan encouraged Fogerty to perform Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Proud Mary’, helping him overcome a long-standing reluctance to revisit his former band’s material after damaging disputes with its record label.

Fogerty had largely avoided CCR songs for around 15 years, fearing that performances would benefit Fantasy Records, and described himself as emotionally damaged by that period. During the two-hour set, the musicians played rock-and-roll standards as well as Dylan’s ‘Watching the River Flow’; Fogerty’s return to ‘Proud Mary’ preceded further CCR performances at a Vietnam veterans’ benefit later that year.
